If your interest was piqued by the mention of a wee baby rhino in the title of this post, I shan't keep you waiting any longer, but get straight to it :-)
So last week, in addition to it being my birthday, it was also World Rhino Day so I thought I'd share this pic with you :
Just look at the size of his feet ! |
My friend B & her hubby live and work on a game reserve in north-western South Africa, and when this little newborn was abandoned by his rhino mum, B got to look after him for a wee while before he went off to a nearby sanctuary to be cared for until he's big & strong enough to go back into the wild. Isn't he just the sweetest wee baby rhino you ever did see ?
Rhinos are an endangered species and I salute the efforts of peeps like my friends and so many others who work tireless to stop the poaching and help preserve these amazing creatures.
Right, now - back to my birthday . . .
Imagine my delight when I opened this lovely bundle of fabulous goodies from Sublime Stitching {thanks Hubby-darling}
- some fun alphabet patterns and a whole bunch of yummy threads,
which I am having immense fun with already.
Remember my chubby little screen-printed birdie that I made last week ?
Well, I'm pleased to say, he now has an eye, a wing, two spindly legs and some fluffy tail feathers.
I should get around to embroidering the letters sometime in the week, then I haven't quite decided whether to make a cushion or just leave it as hoop art - what do you think ?
And never one to be outshone by a cute fellow creature, here's the Jerry-dog photo-bombing my pic to take a closer look . . .
I should also point out that once she discovered the little chubby birdie was neither real nor edible, she retreated in disgust.
Linking up today with lovely Chrissie for Stitching Sundays - do pop over and have a little hop around all the other fab stitchy projects.
'til next time,
xoxo
Super cute - can't wait to see it all stitched up! Love the rhino :)
ReplyDeleteI bet that baby rhino isn't so small now. Love the birdie and the dog photo-bombing.

The chubby birdie is fabulous! Oh, I really love what you're doing with it (ooo, aren't you all *mixed media*!), and the stitched letters will be such a great touch. But what to do with it? Hmmm, I'm pondering that question on my blog, too...and what a fantastic birthday bundle you received! Well done hubby! Chrissie x PS Big thanks to your friend for looking after the baby rhino, I'll never forget a brief glimpse of one on safari in the Serengeti...
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! So sorry I'm late! Looks like you scored! WTG!

It is such an amazing job to be doing what your friend and hubby does and I salute them! That baby is so so ougat, ek will hom sommer a drukkie gee! Oh my your hubby did a super job getting you a fab birthday pressie and I am sure you are going to have heaps of fun doing it, just like we will have heaps of fun seeing the end result. Love your birdie and how you have brought it to life. I personally would just leave it as a hoop art, but then the idea of a cushion does sound like a great idea. Decisions, decisions. ReplyDeleteDear Gilly
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you received some perfect birthday presents. The baby rhino is so sweet and I have huge respect for people doing what they do to help to protect creatures like these. Your embroidery is just lovely - such a happy-looking bird. I'm looking forward to seeing what you decide to make it into.
Best wishes
Ellie
Happy belated birthday, Gilly. Your wee bird looks great. I had to laugh at the Jerry-dog and her disgust that the wee bird wasn't real! :oD
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday Gilly!
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet birthday gift, beautiful threads!
The baby rhino is just adorable, love the big feet:0
Have a great week!

I think that's the only baby Rhino I've ever seen. Happy birthday
ReplyDeleteGilly, I'm so glad you had a Happy Birthday celebration and that you are enjoying using your birthday presents! Your current pretty project could make a sweet pillow, but I would lean toward perching it where I could enjoy looking at it as hoop art, I think. Thanks for sharing the photo of the baby rhino ... precious.

A very happy birthday to you, sounds like you had a fabulous day.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you had a very good birthday Gilly - we're on the same wavelength with our threads and I hope you like them when you get going with them.
ReplyDeleteI love your little birdie more and more, and Jerry-dog!
Wonderful work your friends are doing, and what a little? beauty the baby rhino is.
I'll be interested to see what you do with little birdie for I'm sure he'll look stunning whatever you decide.

Oh my!! Baby Rhinos are just soooo adorable!! Thanks for sharing :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a dear your hubby is - he bought you some gorgeous looking threads by the looks of it. Happy belated birthday xxx
PS Your little birdie looks lovely in his hoop but would look great on a cushion too :-)
ReplyDeleteLeave as a hoop leave as a hoop...
ReplyDeleteAnother vote for leaving it as hoop art from me ... it looks perfectly suited to a circular presentation.
ReplyDeleteAnd I never really thought of rhinos as cute, but that little chap sure is :)
Definitely hoop!
ReplyDeleteI love the baby rhino, lots of ahhs from me when I saw it.
Hello Gilly, I have just discovered your blog, I shall enjoy visiting often. I just read you post about screen printing, I use to love doing that when I was at school...xxxxxx years ago! In fact there is a picture on my blog of a dress that I made with fabric that I printed. What a lovely birthday present, Sublime Stitching is such an iconic embroidery site. Anyway I shall look forward to reading your next post, Sarah xo
ReplyDeleteA little bird told me it was your birthday, oh yes it was your little bird. So cute. I'd go with the hoop art effect.
